10 years of the “Perlenschatz” women’s shelter

Christine Schirrmacher spoke about the work for women in need on the occasion of the 10th anniversary

(Bonn, 23.12.2024) On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the “Perlenschatz” women’s shelter, the ambassador of “Perlenschatz”, Bonn-based Islamic scholar Prof. Dr. Christine Schirrmacher, spoke to around 200 guests in Giessen. She explained the particular challenges faced by women from patriarchal societies who flee from early and forced marriages, violence, honor killings or the threat of child abduction to the “Perlenschatz” women’s shelter.

According to the ambassador, the “Federal Domestic Violence Report” recorded over 256,000 cases in 2023 in Germany – i.e. over a quarter of a million victims – of which around 70 % were female. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, the number of victims of domestic violence rose by 6.5 % in 2023. Of course, this does not yet include the number of unreported cases. According to Schirrmacher, a rough estimate of the number of honor killings in Germany per year is around 50 cases – but here, too, there is a high number of unreported cases. The women’s shelter “Perlenschatz” tries to counter this need and support those seeking help in a variety of ways, said Schirrmacher.

Numerous victims had their say at the ceremony. They described their desperate situation, but also their great gratitude for having found comprehensive help with court cases, dealing with the authorities or childcare at “Perlenschatz”. Anette Bauscher is the founder and director of the work.
