By Bishop Thomas Schirrmacher
(Bonn, 24.06.2026) Together with the global Ruling Council of the Communio Messianica, I grieve the loss of Dr Atif Debs, who went to be with the LORD June 19, 2026, but even more, we give thanks to God for his extraordinary life—a life marked by intellectual brilliance, unwavering faith, courageous witness, and humble service.
Our grief is made even deeper because, within such a short time, Communio Messianica after Sam Solomon has lost a second outstanding leader and the second of its pillars as founding members of the Ruling Council established in Bonn 2016. Those who helped establish this unique fellowship did so with extraordinary vision, courage, and perseverance. Today we bid farewell to another of those remarkable men.
Many knew Atif as an outstanding engineer, a distinguished professor, and an internationally respected business consultant. Throughout a long and accomplished career, he combined scientific excellence with practical wisdom. As an engineer he helped solve complex problems; as a professor he inspired generations of students; as a consultant he advised organizations around the world with clarity, precision, and vision.
Yet these impressive achievements tell only part of his story. The defining chapter of Atif’s life was not written in a university, a boardroom, or an engineering laboratory. It was written in his encounter with Jesus Christ.
Born and raised in the Islamic tradition, Atif undertook a journey that required extraordinary intellectual honesty and immense personal courage. His decision to follow Christ was not made lightly. It came after careful study, deep reflection, and a sincere search for truth. That decision transformed his life and became the foundation upon which everything else rested.
His faith was never merely private. It shaped his character, his relationships, his scholarship, and his witness. He spoke about Christ not with hostility toward others, but with profound conviction, humility, and genuine love for those who were still searching. Through Communio Messianica, he became an encouragement to countless believers, particularly to those who had themselves come to faith from Muslim backgrounds. He understood the challenges they faced because he had walked that road himself. His wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment strengthened many who might otherwise have felt alone.
Those who worked with him remember not only his keen mind but also his generous spirit. He listened carefully. He treated people with respect. He delighted in thoughtful conversation. He believed that truth and love belong together, and he sought to embody both.
Even in the final chapter of his earthly life, Atif remained a teacher. After the recent death of Sam Salomon, he went through all the scholarly works of his friend and boiled it down to an easy to understand book with a lot of graphs and explanations. It was my privilege to assist Atif in bringing this book to completion, and I shall always be grateful for the opportunity to work with him on what became his final written testimony. I hope it will be made available to the public soon.
It is fitting that this last work stands as part of his enduring legacy. It reflects the very path he himself travelled: a lifelong pursuit of truth, a fearless willingness to ask difficult questions, and an unshakable confidence that truth ultimately leads to Christ.
For those of us who remain, Atif leaves a challenge.
He reminds scholars to pursue knowledge with integrity.
He reminds Christians to unite conviction with compassion.
He reminds all seekers never to be afraid of following the evidence wherever it leads and pay the price.
And he reminds us that the greatest achievements of this world—even distinguished careers, academic honors, and professional success—find their true meaning only when they are placed in the service of the triune God.
Today we mourn because we loved him. But we do not mourn without hope. The Lord whom Atif confessed throughout his life has also given the promise that sustained him:
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25)
The angels in heaven will rejoice and clap because of the many who found salvation in Jesus Christ through Atif. Although he never met many of them, his greatest reward will be to meet them all one by one.
May we remember Dr Atif Debs not only for what he accomplished, but for who he became: a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, a courageous witness to the truth, a gifted scholar, a devoted friend, a founding leader of Communio Messianica, and a servant of God’s Kingdom.
And may he now rest in the eternal presence of the Savior whom he loved and served.
Personally, I shall remember Atif not only for his scholarship and wisdom, but for his friendship, his quiet humility, and his unwavering confidence in the Lord he had found after such a courageous journey. His voice will be missed among us, but his witness will continue to speak. May God comfort his family, his friends, and all of us in Communio Messianica until we meet him again in the presence of our Lord.
